I hate to admit it, but I am a member of the Twitter community. For better or for worse, I tweet (every now and then). One of the better things that I've gotten from Twitter is a follower named Marshall from Firecook'r. When I saw that he had decided to follow me, I thought I would take a quick look at his website. What I found was YouTube for the grilling and BBQ crow. Huzzah! Just what I've been waiting for....The guys at Firecook'r hope that you will upload your own how-to videos in addition to the content they are providing.
So,I sent Marshall a message and asked if I could help spread the word about what they were trying to do with Firecook'r and how the idea came to be. Marshall quickly responded, and I asked if I could do an interview to share with the BBQgeek readers. Marshall referred me to his partner Sean, who graciously agreed to answer a few questions. Here is Sean, in his own words, in an email interview we conducted a couple weeks ago.
1. What gave you the idea to start Firecook'r?
Sean: "When you're slow smoking barbecue in the backyard, you have lots of time to think. Cooking meat over an open fire is a primal instinct. Everything tastes better when its cooked on the grill and I wanted a community site where grill & barbecue fans could share tips and have some fun.
For the past 10 years, I've been barbecuing and making websites so it was a natural fit. "
2. What is your background with BBQ and grilling?
Sean: "I grew up grilling steaks and barbecuing brisket in Texas. When I moved to Atlanta, I couldn't find any good brisket. It wasn't easy to find the right cut of beef in Georgia, and it wasn't easy to find mesquite chips. So I wound up slow-smoking Texas brisket for myself and my friends. I started with a barrel water smoker then moved to the double barrel off-set smoker which I thought was pretty cool because it had a chimney. Then I discovered how good pork bbq is and got a ceramic smoker. I really enjoy learning as much about barbecue as I can."
3. What is the history of your partnership with Marshall?
Sean: "Mutual respect in the web community. We both like good, clean, easy-to-use sites and we both love to grill. So when the idea for a BBQ 2.0 website came up, Marshall was the the right person because he really understands how cool this site can be."
4. What style BBQ do you prefer?
Sean: "Texas Brisket for sure. Anything made in the backyard by someone who puts takes their time and puts their heart into it... that's always the best."
5. What are you favorite BBQ restaurants in ATL?
Sean: "I like Spiced Right. Fox Brothers always hooks it up."
6. What do you hope to see for the future of Firecook'r?
Sean: "This is a site made for bbq fans. We like talking about grilling and we have alot to learn from each other so we can create better barbecue for our own family and friends. Look for celebrity chef, more instructional videos, equipment reviews. It's still early in phase one of the site, but we're already planning some mobile applications that you can mess around with while you're in the backyard barbecuing."
7. What is the target audience of Firecook'r?
Sean: The real key to an active bbq community is by creating several ways to interact with the other FireCookrs on the site. I want to help the average guy learn the basics of grilling. For the advanced guys, we're going to be announcing online competitions and people can rate each other's stuff. We have instructional videos coming from celebrity chefs which will be alot of fun.
